Help with buying easel for painting please?
Hi guys!
I’m a high school student and i’ve been doing visual arts for a few years now.
I’m considering to buy an easel but i honestly don’t know much about them at all. In fact i’m not sure whether i should buy one or stick to painting on the floor or at my desk since i’m pretty short on cash =/
I often do oil paintings and other times watercolours or acrylics.
My paintings are often A3 sized and sometimes A2. In future i’d might like to work A1 sized, but i don’t work that large right now. I usually work on oil paper and sometimes canvas.
So what type of easel would you recommend for me? I don’t want it to be expensive, preferable less than $200 or even $150.
Or should i not waste my money, and work without an easel?
A good easel can be a life-long investment.
If you are sincerely interested in art, I would consider getting yourself a modest easel that will last through college.
You may paint small now, but in 5 years time, you may be painting quite large.
You are always better off getting a little more than you need, that way you won’t feel inhibited as you start to grow.
I highly recommend this easel:

The most important aspect is the h-frame design.
A tripod style easel falls over VERY easily.
The easel is inexpensive (just $80) and is well constructed.
I owned one for all of my college years, and proceeded to use it professionally for 3 years after that
Ultimately, I started painting really large (about 4 feet high), and the easel just wasn’t sturdy enough to support that large of a canvas.
But for the serious student, and even most professionals, this easel is MORE than adequate.
If you have a little extra money,
I would strongly consider this easel as well.
It can flip horizontal for watercolors and pastels:

I have a second studio, and I keep 2 of these there.
Very study, very dependable.
Good luck!
