Utilizing A Loft Space To The Best Of It’S Advantage

I happen to have a friend or two (perhaps more) who live in close quarters: city dwellers. Actually, they also live in some of what I call the most remote areas of “rural Vermont.†All of these people happen to have these lofted structurally embedded habitats in their homes/apartments.

Some are larger than others, but I must say that with a little guidance or sense of creativity, these otherwise “ raised storage areas†can become a place that offers function to the most unexpected areas in your home. Whether it be a long narrow space, spanning no wider than 3′ft x 12 ft. in length, with the proper placement of open bookshelves (that are back lit with nothing more than rope lighting that you pick up from Home Depot).  Or perhaps you can throw in a beanbag chair or one of these – a modern approach to an old fashioned take on a bean bag. This space magically becomes a great hideaway to spend a rainy day getting deeply involved in a novel, or a showcase for artwork to viewers below at an evening cocktail party.

Introduce an easel, paints and a palette to make this your little art studio. Whatever your hobby, I am sure you can encompass your talent in a dedicated space all of its own!

Larger lofts may accommodate a sofa and desk, becoming quite the office overlooking the space below, giving the inhabitant the ability to maintain a sense of comfort in an otherwise secluded environment.

Think about the space below- Many of us have had the experience of dormitory life in college, doing our best to maximize living space by raising our beds to the ceiling and placing s desk below.

Consider the obvious: explore lighting options, make this a focal point in an otherwise large room. Remember to give the loft character – make it represent YOU.
