Hang art with a nail or a screw?

I recently purchased a framed art reproduction, it came with all the necessary hardware, accept for the actual nail or screw… so what should I use for a 20″x24″ heavy set framed oil painting…

don’t use a nail. especially in drywall. always use a plug and then a screw. and make sure that the screws/wire on the back (if they’re not on yet) are 1/3 of the way down. also, if you have a wood frame and what to make sure that it doesn’t warp (it will warp b/c its natural, it breathes and even in a living room, there is moisture), don’t use wire. hang directly on the screws. its a little harder to hang, but trust me, once its done, it’ll be more secure, and less likely to warp. if you’re using wire, use wire in plastic. hope that helps.

(p.s. this comes from 7 years of custom framing).

what i need to use with oil painting?

Hi everybody,

i like to use oil painting and i bought a box , tried so many times but my paintings never seen like others professional.i have so many paintings with Charcoal but learn nothing about oil.
what do i use with?can i use water or what?

You don’t use water with oil painting because they don’t mix. You use turpentine and other mediums. The best way to start is to get a book for beginner oil painters. you can get them for about $5 and up. Also you might consider a beginner class. It takes time to learn oil painting, I have been painting most of my life and I am still learning. If you buy a book they will show you different materials and exercises to start you up. I guess you got a box of paints already so I would use them with the brushes that come with your set. You said you use charcoal, so I would do paintings of the things that You drew with charcoal and have fun with it.

Supplies are going to be needed when you start painting. That’s a given. Of course oil paints and then brushes are needed. You’ll need your canvas as well. Yet, there are other things which you will need as well. Charcoal is sometimes needed for you to begin your sketch. You’ll also need a palette, palete knife, sketch book, painting mediums, and an easel.

Now, you also need to know how to draw. The reason that you need to know how to draw is because you will want to sketch your drawing. Beginners as mentioned, will use charcoal as they draw out their ideas and then use the oil paints to paint in the picture. So, if you aren’t up on your drawing, we do recommend that you practice this.

When you do oil painting, there are a few basics there. These are things that you really need to focus on. You first focus on the composition. This is where you place items and so forth. That is why you want to plan ahead and so forth. People look at paintings and wonder why artists put things in the places that they put them in. The next thing is color. Bright colors mean cheerful bright energy. Think of the mood you are going for when using your colors. Another is values. This is how you go about getting the three dimensional look. Try overlapping objects. Another one is texture, use the thicker oils for the more important areas on your painting. The last one is edges. This is where you make two paints meet. When you use edges, you will want to make sure that you learn to soften them.

There are many techniques with this as you will find. Due to how extensive it is, it’s best to get resources that help you to understand just how to do all these different techniques and exactly when you should use them. Many think they can just jump into oil painting as they have been doing this before. However, you will find that that’s not true. Oil painting is a bit different from other types of painting.

So, where do you go to get art instructions if you are new to oil painting? There are a few ways. Now, some would tell you that taking art instructions live is the best way. Sometimes, your local art museum might have lessons for you. There are always people willing to teach you. However, if you can’t find someone in your area, there are other ways to learn.

There are many resources out there that teach oil painting for beginners. You just have to look for them. There are books on the topic. There are videos on the topic. Now that the web has taken form, there are even websites that can teach you how to paint with oil paints. You might never know what will help you. Find what works for you.

Oil painting is a very delicate form of art. There are many things that you need to know when you go to paint. That is why it’s best if you learn what those techniques are. So, don’t let anything stop you from learning the things that you need to know. See what is out there and delve into the world of oil painting for beginners. Wang Guangyi Biography and Artwork at Saatchi-gallery

Wang Guangyi belongs to the category of Chinese contemporary art termed Political Pop: work that appropriates the visual tropes of the propaganda of the Cultural Revolution, reworking them in the flat, colorful style of American Pop. To understand the works of artists engaged in this practice, it is important to recognize the significance and specificity of the images they are using to fashion their work. Without this knowledge, the work of artists like Wang Guangyi may be reduced to a mere aestheticization of the experiences of the Cultural Revolution, a view which threatens to limit the discussion of these works to their formal elements, foreclosing more important ideological and historical questions that must be raised. It is perhaps equally essential, particularly for Western audiences, to keep in mind the dominance that the Maoist regime held over visual culture and artistic production in China from 1949 to 1976, a control that reached a near totality between 1966 and 1972, during the Gang of Four’s reign[i]. Certainly, the vast legacy of propaganda that resulted from this period will continue to impact artists interested in critically examining China’s recent visual history. After all, these images were more than simply popular; for a time, they were the only ones allowed.

Wang Guangyi’s The Great Criticism series (1998), the artist responds to the influx of a new visual regime: those advertising images promoting newly available, high-priced commodities. In the resulting oil paintings, Wang stages conflicts between classical figures of propaganda and the onslaught of luxury consumer goods entering China. In the first propaganda image below, three heroes of the revolution seem to be manning the front lines of ideology, as Chairman Mao floats above them like a benevolent and watchful god. From left to right the costumes of these three identify them as an industrial laborer, a soldier in the People’s Liberation Army, and a farmer—examples of “red†people, proletariat who would pave the way for the future. The caption below captures the ferocity of their revolutionary zeal: “People around the world, unite! Abolish American Imperialism! Abolish Soviet Reactionaries! Abolish Counter-revolutionaries throughout the country![ii]†The intense animosity of this trio is harnessed and redeployed by Wang Guangyi in The Great Criticism [BMW] (1998), in which the same three figures look defiantly out toward the future of free enterprise and utter a resounding “No!†But what, exactly, is being refused? What is being criticized?

Wang’s works—and others like them—is their ability to resist absolute clarity, instead creating a surprising tension between consumer and Maoist imagery. Without being overtly critical—refusing the tactic of direct accusation that often short-circuits more provocative discussion—Wang is able to call into question both the capitalist and communist symbols in his work, allowing us to see them as conflicting and competing precisely because of their mutual insistence on hegemony. In this way, the artist is indicating the uneasy points of confluence between China’s Maoist past and its promising economic future. These paintings suggest that resistance or protest in the visual arts is deeply dependent of the cultural context in which works are made. For while Wang Guangyi’s works may be read as a critique of China’s new economics today, they may have passed—with slight modification—for government propaganda not too long ago. It is precisely this polyvalence in Wang Guangyi’s paintings that is their greatest strength.
