Instructional video trading?

Is anyone intrested in martial arts instructional videos. I have a large amount of instructional video and enjoy trading them out for new and diff. videos. My collection has the older 70′s and 80′s self defense type video up to modern s.d. I have a large amount of mma fights. All would be “backup” copies. I never allow originals to leave my house. I use DVD + as a medium of transfer. I have all kinds of styles and systems, even those I do not find important myself. I keep a library of ma info. on dvd, for not only myself but for others. A list can be emailed to you if your intrested.

Well, I would be interested in knowing more details on what you have to offer.

What are some good art instruction books to learn how to draw anime and manga?

My friend who is 12 years old (but she draws like a 14 year old. Pretty good.) really wants to know how to draw anime and manga. She strongly dislikes shonen but she likes shojo. She LOVES art by Miyizaki and the art from 5 Centimeters Per Second by Makoto Shinkai. She hates the cheesy instruction books with bad american art. You should also tell me what book store or whatever. Any recomendations for this picky girl?

Early Childhood: Water Activity Ideas?

I have to do a school project for my final grade in an Early Childhood curriculum class. The theme is basically anything to do with water, and it is geared toward is infants and toddlers.

Does anyone have any suggestions for educational, fine motor, discovery-science, ABC activites, block activties, or art activties having to do with water??

Also I have to have 2 weeks worth of book titles to come up with (so 10 books total), Does anyone know of any water themd books for infants and toddlers?

Thank you :) :) your advice is much appreciated!

I’m thinking infant-toddler and almost all of that would be “free-exploration”, correct me if I’m wrong!

Fine Motor:
* sponges are the best for this age. Squeeze squeeze squeeze! Great for hand strengthening. You can use different type of sponges (dollar store), different shape or color sponges, you can add number or alphabet sponges.
* Float foamie shapes in the water…or alphabet foamies or number foamies and have a dry erase board or plexiglass near by. They can use a sieve to “catch” the shapes and put them on the plexiglass. The water will make them “stick” for awhile on the board.

Blocks:
* I would use plastic blocks or other plastic manipulatives…this would also fall under discovery/science. Provide floating foam boards or plastic boats. Also provide blocks or manipulatives for them to put onto the boards/boats and see if they can get them to sink.

* Provide a plastic “slide” (a doll slide works perfectly) and blocks/manipulatives of various weights. Let them slide the items down the slide and into the water. Which make the bigger splash? Kids love to manipulatives on the top of the slide and use a cup of water to make it “slide” down. Works best if the slide is set up in the middle of the table!

Art:
* washable markers on coffee filters and spray bottles of water or cups of water and paint brushes to make the colors blend. Older toddlers, about 2-2.5 can start to use eye droppers and drop water onto the coffee filters. Of course they can be turned into butterflies, flowers, block letters, etc.

Discovery-Science:
* Provide various sized containers and funnels. Chunky short to tall and narrow.

* On a warm day let them step into a washtub of water and run on a stretch of side walk. What happens to the foot prints? The sun makes them go away. Same can be done with large paint brushes and their own small buckets of water. They can paint the sidewalks and etc. This is great for those prewriting skills.

* Place various liquids, including water, into transparent bottles…add glitter, sequins, colorful paper clips, etc. Hot glue the lid onto the bottle and let the children explore.

Here are other ideas. Many can be used in multiple categories.
* Let the children help you make a bubble solution and blow bubbles.

* I like to do this prior to paint because it’s a “skill” that takes practice. Cut a straw in half, put a few eye dropperfulls of colored water on a tray and let them blow the water through the straw to get it to move.

* cornstarch and water (goop/gak) is a very neat mixture and my toddlers LOVE it. It’s a “clean mess” too. It’ll dry so you can sweep it right up…but then it’s liquidy when they pick it up with the spoon and drizzle it. They LOVE to drizzle at this age.

* make snacks that use water such as jello.

* make scratch and sniff paint. It’s neat to let them make their own and mix it up. Provide a little cup of water to mix into a bowl that has a bit of jello powder in it. You can talk about what color they think it’s going to be. Let them paint. Let it dry. Smell.

* Your type of “tools” you put in water play change the skill levels used. I like to put small medicine cups or tablespoons in for more fine motor work.

* Bug catchers make great sensory play tools, even with water. Helps with developing the muscles used for cutting with scissors.

Oh, I could go on and on with water! We use it at least once a week and if I don’t I get “scolded” by the children! :-) There are so many ways to vary it. If you find there is a specific area you need more ideas for, feel free to email. I’ll see what I can do.

Edit: Thought of another activity we did recently that was a hit. It was for our rain theme. I had foam raindrops and glued foam numbers on it. You can glue color splotches, alphabet, shapes, etc. Then we put them inside of an upside down umbrella and sang Rain Rain Go Away and at the last verse the child with the umbrella flipped it up so it “rained” the raindrops. You can do so much with those raindrops, if you plan it right. Review/recognition, spelling names of the children, numerical or alphabet order, etc.

Greatness of Armenian Art

Ever since the wars that tore it apart years ago, Armenia has been a small country. Throughout history, many people have set their sights on conquering this rich territory and enslaving the exuberant population therein. That said, Armenia continues to be a land with a
unique history, a fairytale-like epos and a strikingly distinctive culture.

Stones and ceramics have been preserved in the incomparable specimens of Armenian paintings and sculptures. The walls of Etchmiadzin, the Ereruyk Basilica, the Tatar Monastery and of other temples carefully preserve exquisite ornaments, reliefs and bass-reliefs which, to this day, reflect the imagination of humankind. Armenian paintings are rich in ornaments that depict animals, plants, the history of Christianity and everyday life scenes.

The emotion and strength of the imagination of artists have transformed ordinary stone walls into story-telling works of art.

After a time, icons began to appear in Armenian creations. Miniatures that depict religious imagery in the illustrations of books stand out, even now, in terms of their vividness and picturesque imagery.

The creativity of the Armenian nation is not limited to religious subjects. Since the emergence of mounted paintings, pictures with a Soviet content began to be more common. In the 19 th century, Armenia gave the world the gift in the form of the great artist-marinist Ivan (Ovanes) Aivazovski. His maritime themes which depict the beautiful Caucasian landscapes and everyday life scenes (displayed in more than 6000 canvases) are filled with the radiance of the lavish sun and spill out from his brushes.

Another example of creativity can be seen in the famous Armenian rugs. The roots of this element of Armenian creativity predate Christianity. It is no secret that the rugs in Armenia have a special status which is near to esoteric. Even the ornaments depict symbols of God, glory, protection, sacrifice and success. The cross and crucifixion symbols show off multifaceted swastikas and stars with many points depicting delightful images of the World and of God.

God and the World are everlasting images that stand alongside humanity. These symbols have been used especially in the contemporary abstract creations of Armenian painters, such as Arship Gorki, Gagik Manukiyan, Minas Avetisiyan and others. Through lines and colours, abstractionists express their perspectives on the whole concept of creation. The complex world of humankind and creation manifests itself in the smooth juxtaposition of shades and tones in vivid colours; as if the rugs of the ancient masters (or contemporary abstract paintings) are saturated with sacred concepts.

Similarly, in the ancient frescoes and miniatures, contemporary paintings of Armenia have remained, over the centuries, as depictions of a fine artistic emotions and the unification with nature.
