How would you rank these SIMON & GARFUNKEL Albums?

There are no “Right or Wrong” answers :)

Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.
Sounds of Silence
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme
Bookends
Bridge over Troubled Water

2. Art Garfunkel –

Angel Clare
Breakaway
Watermark
Fate for Breakfast
Scissors Cut

3. Paul Simon –

The Paul Simon Songbook
Paul Simon
There Goes Rhymin’ Simon
Still Crazy After All These Years
One-Trick Pony
Hearts and Bones
Graceland
The Rhythm of the Saints
Songs from The Capeman
You’re the One
Surprise

BQ — Was “Mrs. Robinson” ever released on a Studio Album, or ONLY the Soundtrack to “The Graduate”?
.

S&G:
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme
Sounds of Silence
Bookends (though the last two are a virtual tie for second. If I have to put them in order though I’ll go that way)
Bridge Over Troubled Water
Wed. Morning

actually don’t know any of Art’s solo stuff. I love S&G and I couldn’t tell you why I never tried.

Paul Simon:
Graceland
Rhythm of the Saints
Songs From the Capeman
Paul Simon
Rhymin’ Simon
Hearts and Bones (though the song Hearts and Bones is probably my favorite song by him)
Surprise
You’re the One

I actually haven’t picked up One Trick Pony and I always thought the Songbook was a collection, not an actual album. In reading the description of it, it is suddenly on the top of my “to purchase” list. Thanks for that.

***
had to go back in and flip Capeman and the self titled. It’s really, really close there but I think when the self titled highs are a little higher, Capeman is more solid and I think wins out in the end.

BA: I think it’s only on The Graduate, but I could be wrong if there is some release other than the greatest hits ones and the ones you listed (which I feel like I would know, but I don’t follow things so thoroughly). I saw a funny interview once where he talked about how when he wrote it initially it was “Mrs. Roosevelt” and he played a couple lines. Not sure if he was serious or not, but it was neat.

**************
Holy s*it. It is on Bookends. Guess it’s been a while since I’ve listened to it. Glad you caught that Ape Pondering Tail.

A tribute to a Maker Clipboard

A good friend died recently. We did not have each other for many years, we laughed and shook hands with each other and greeted with much pleasure, and a feeling of welcome true. He had always been there, he had two son of the same as me, and about the same age, in fact we were the same age, he shared his family and his son and daughters in law, son and his grandson with us more of my name and many ganbei's' Over the years many evenings dining in sumptuous rooms better food in Boshan. Our discussions been through my agent, or by our smiles and gestures. Yes, he and his family have lived and built our factory in China sulfide with us.

When started trading, it has been thanks to my very good friend who has lived and worked in the Chinese Qingdao Trading Company, which sold its items in its warehouse. Qingdao has always made me feel at ease, because of my good hostess. And the good hotels, the sea, and the similarity of Chinese in my city house in Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, both are tourist areas, and yes it was the same as the recent Games in Qingdao Olympics in China, but in those days it was still a great character, and the streets are very narrow and crowded, totally unrecognizable in the Games.

Until the highway was built the only real communication between Boshan and Qingdao is being built in 1904 to link the industrial complex and port. The route by rail or expressway is quite long, but interesting with many types of agriculture, people working in fields, small villages, and land banked greenhouses. The region is very different from rice in Jiangsu, where our other glass objects are made, as is corn campaign, ears pricked and hung together all available buildings, and the sides of the highway take ideal drying surfaces for drying corn in bulk on mats, seagrass carpets as we use ourselves in the sun on the beach. The family of my friend is a family Farmers, like many industries in the first factory was financed by small local farming community. My friend knew of my love for fresh sweet corn, so there was always a constant supply of fresh corn cooking in the oven for workers and myself. He knew I loved grapes, so there were always bowls of fresh grapes of his land, being a farmer, he was allowed to have both son. The artisans are equal men and women, while packers and shippers for the containers were all women, always laughing and smiling, he was a community happy, each in their own expert craftsman transmitted the art of paperweights and glass making big day. The amazing way in which art is made, so totally by hand with the use of pins, needles, long stems range from front to back in the oven until the section glowing is perfect, so great for cutting out the clipboard, the article and carefully taken to the cooling trays before being checked Cooling cracks or imperfections, sanding the base, polishing and packaging, all by hand.

It is difficult to explain the feeling of seeing the first new models, and new colors and color variations, after the elements have cooled, yet I nothing other than having my companion develop the design and color variation, each fountain, the droplets of color.

I remember still sulphide first dolphin, very low at the beginning as we tried to make the inclusion of both time and had to be broken or cooling is out malformed, and sulfide fish first, then there is no stopping now, crabs, lobsters, turtles, and panties and dogs, you name it done.
Then there was the introduction of the gold leaf in the clipboard, gold has historically been used to create the red and pink, but we did a lot of business with the UAE at the time, and they wanted the gold in their clipboard to be sold in their tourism market, as well as our customers in Kuwait and Malta. All paperwork and duty to be paid, when the leaf had to be imported from Japan, and in those days was import allowed only for items for re-export.

When we started to import the clipboard, there were strict quotas in place, with lots of forms and registers to keep, and you literally quota allocated to your best customers. At this time, there were very few Western ideas, and before my friend put in place, there were only two very old and famous factories who made the wonderful flower paperweight glass, originally made for the emperors and later in the 1920s and 1930s to collectors in the yard of the way from Shanghai to the rich, with fabulous beads and glass blue, similar to those excavated the region, made in the 5th century BC, although the manufacture of glass is most commonly dated to 700 years Boshan.

My friend take care for us to "climb the mountain" to "The small factory that makes traditional molded glass bottles, jars and plates, it was one of my favorite trips on passing through the villages with their agricultural life, as it must have been in our campaigns before our industrial revolution, the beautiful view, old terraces, there since the earliest civilizations. The cable cars taking to the origin faithful to the monastery, now Chinese tourists on the World Heritage site, the remains of the old aqueduct, which would be as old as old as the Roman aqueducts to feed the terraces of the mountain. People in the bed of the shallow river, sorting pebbles necks, ready to be packed in bags and plastic bins for glass to be sold in garden centers and interior Stores worldwide, and large stones by hand carted to the building. We go more and more and then we're here, the molds are made by hand and the new plates are expressed and quantified, it is high here that even in the sun, it is cold and the plant is frozen during the winter, if production time is limited. It gives us some cookies, that all they have to Westerners, then back to the mountains and in time for cool, then eat another house famous for another meal and beer and Qingdao in Baijiu toasting glasses, which is the famous liqueur strong white. The whole family are there with the relationships that make all the drivers for and the organization of maritime transport, and a good time is done by all, and I'm 'ganbei with anyone except the children, so I'm happy to be before returning to my hotel with big box No bananas and grapes.

We left the next morning to the "Clipboard Glass Animal Factory", which is the country in a different direction the day before, through the villages of old corn, corn hanging everywhere that we go through all the small villages in the middle of nowhere, we stop in one village, I never remember the village turn right, there are slippers and belt driven tractors pulling carts full of corn during and huge piles of the rod feed. We set up outside the large wooden doors, the director stated that all workers are collection of cultures, but the cook and two of its former leaders and more experienced are there for us, what happens this time of year every time we visit. The plant also manufactures our glass fruit, grapes and vegetables and the very first time we visited I very wary of the meal offered, but the head, no white hats here, cooks in the amount of wonderful vegetarian dishes for me and my companions, we are joined by the head of the village cooperative of farmers who have financed the factory and beer flows in Qingdao for everyone, except my friends son who was given during the day to lead us, as they are old friends. In this factory, workers are all farmers, but everything is made hand, once the skill level is fantastic, the fusion of color in carrots, raisins, and the detail in pineapple fruit and mini.

We go back to my plant friends, because it is our last night we leave tomorrow, so we check all the costing and organizing around production, packaging, and order of the silk lined presentation boxes. We have our last dinner in the most expensive and "Recent Night Club 'we are greeted by hostesses in traditional dress, and taken to our table, and the statistics of cabaret with a group of Western dressed girls singing live backing tracks to popular songs of the West, followed by a band of musicians playing a mixture of Chinese and Western instruments, the result was very good, and if another good visit is over, my host took care of us so well again, how I'll miss him.

The Grapes of Wrath (Centennial Edition)

When The Grapes of Wrath was published in 1939, America, still recovering from the Great Depression, came face to face with itself in a startling, lyrical way. John Steinbeck gathered the country’s recent shames and devastations–the Hoovervilles, the desperate, dirty children, the dissolution of kin, the oppressive labor conditions–in the Joad family. Then he set them down on a westward-ru…

What do u think of the hottest new artist Jay Sean?

He’s really moved up on the billboard top 100, do u think that he is overrated or underrated.

I liked his song down and all or nothing. I don’t really think that it’s fair to rate him right away since he hasn’t really gotten the chance to show what he can truly do just yet.

art ensemble chicago

art ensemble chicago
What is your favorite Art Ensemble of Chicago album/song/moment?

feel free to include Roscoe Mitchell Sextet, Brass Fantasy, or any other project that the members of the Art Ensemble did.
rythamatist- I’m horribly jealous.

Smiley- Yeah, I havent seen them mentioned very often on here either. R&P was overrun with questions about Blink 182 reuniting so i figured it was a good time to retreat to the Jazz section for a bit. I totally agree with 69-71 as their best period, Les Stances a Sophie and the Jacksons at home are 2 of my favorites. Theme de Yo-Yo from les stances always knocks me off my feat. What a way to start an album, fontella bass is a force of nature on that recording. Incidentally, i also love a 69-71 album you didnt mention, Art ensemble of chicago featuring fontella bass, a much more subtle performance from her, but just as devastatingly effective. Roscoe Mitchell’s Sound album and Jarmon’s together alone with braxton are great albums also. Great picks.
smiley- great video- malachi favors was a badass on that bass.

Wow…this is the first time I’ve ever heard them mentioned here!
I preferred their earlier works, from around 1969-71.’A Jackson in Your House’ is still one of my favorites, even after all these years. It would be followed by ‘People in Sorrow’, ‘Les stances a Sophie’, and ‘Phase One’.
Their mid to late 70′s output is worthy also, with ‘Fanfare for the Warriors’ being their best known album I would think. ‘Kabalaba’ was pretty decent also.

I really enjoyed the 2001 release titled ‘Zero Sun No Point (Dedicated to Mynona & Sun Ra)’. This was a collaborative effort between the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Hartmut Geerken, who is a German “free jazz” composer, percussionist and poet, best known for his work with Sun Ra.

As you’ve mentioned, The Roscoe Mitchell Sextet were great also, as was Roscoe’s solo album ‘Sound’ released in ’66, and at times reminded me a bit of Frank Zappa’s earlier avant garde “free jazz” influenced freakier stuff.

The collaboration between French avant garde vocalist Brigitte Fontaine and AEC titled ‘Comme a la Radiowith’ was cool too.

AEC sax man Joseph Jarman released a great album with jazz great Anthony Braxton in the mid 70′s called ‘Together Alone’…not sure if it’s available on CD…but it’s highly recommended if you dig free jazz!

I just found a video on Youtube, which shows them in a tad funkier groove…
I really enjoy this:

Do You Know…?

$26.00

Every night, somewhere in the world, three or four musicians will climb on stage together. Whether the gig is at a jazz club, a bar, or a bar mitzvah, the performance never begins with a note, but with a question. The trumpet player might turn to the bassist and ask, “Do you know ‘Body and Soul’?”-and from there the subtle craft of playing the jazz repertoire is tested in front of a live audience….
