Best Ambient Music Artists to Sleep or Paint on Your Display Easel To Pt. 1
Here is a list of the most influential ambient music artists who have created some of the most beautiful and melodic live and loop based music, whether with computers or live instruments, their music is perfect to rest to or to create your new masterpiece on the display easel.
Brian Eno
Often considered the godfather of ambient music, or at least one of the principal innovators, Brian Eno was an art school kid who made his mark playing keyboards and synthesizers for 70s band Roxy Music. The egos of Eno and lead singer Bryan Ferry would end with Eno’s departure from the band and starting his own unique solo career. He released a number of exciting art rock records with “Here Come the Warm Jets” and “Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)” in the mid-70s. He was always experimenting with new sounds from guitar loops or tape processing but it wasn’t until 1978 when he released “Music for Airports” that his love of “sonic landscapes” seemed to take over. He would later release another album of sonic ambient music with “Apollo” which was loosely based on Eno’s own experience watching the Apollo 11 landing.
Eluvium
The project of Matthew Cooper, Eluvium is one of the most beautiful and transfixing ambient bands of the last decade. Born in Tennessee and raised in Kentucky, Eluvium’s music is a pretty mix of manipulated live instrumentation and Cooper’s classical piano training. His early releases were noted for their length and emphasis on large washes of manipulated sound but it was 2004’s “An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death” that threw fans for a curveball when it was revealed that it would be a departure from his ambient works, being a short album of solo improvisational piano pieces by Cooper alone, that were influenced by Erik Satie. You never know what kind of album you will get from Cooper, but his quality control is never in doubt. He is making some of the freshest and beautiful music of any genre.
